Merger proposal[edit]

I read the Wikipedia help documentation on merging and merge proposals. I don't know if it applies the same to Wiktionary, but I hope this is all correct and "by the books."

Abase and debase both have the same meaning.

Wouldn't it make more sense to include all the information from the article for abase on this article (including listing 'abase' as an alternate/previous/whatever form of the word), while keeping abase as a redirect to this page (or the other way around)?

I'm not sure, but I feel like these days, the usage of 'debase' is higher than the usage of 'abase' in common speech, at least in SB, California anyway, though neither of the synonymous words are often spoken. Actually, I think I haven't heard either word since the last time I watched the TV show 'Carnivale' (about a year ago)...

Anyway, for that reason too, I think that perhaps, debase is more often searched than abase, and therefore they (the readers) aren't seeing the plethora of information on the article for abase.

The two are not the same at all. They have different etymologies and debase is used in more contexts. You can debase a metal, but I don't think you can say the same for abase. In addition to that, we do not merge articles per se. You can either make them synonyms of each other with the Synonyms heading or one, an alternative form of the other. I suggest the former as these two are different words for the reasons I stated above. Other editors might have more to add. JamesjiaoTC 06:23, 17 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
