Since when does ecology mean "The natural environment, all living and non-living things that occur naturally on Earth"???

It doesn’t mean that to me and never has. The Shorter Oxford gives

  1. The branch of biology that deals with organisms’ relations to one another and to the physical environment in which they live; (the study of) such relations as they pertain to a particular habitat or a particular species. Also spec., = human ecology below. L19.
  2. (Also E-.) The political movement that seeks to protect the environment, esp. from pollution. Usu. attrib. L20.
