The caption says, "Californium-252 is expensive, costing ~$27 million per gram." I wrote "brutally" before "expensive", but someone deleted the word "brutally". The word "brutally" should be included, to emphasize that this is not "expensive" in the same way as gold or platinum, but orders of magnitude more expensive; far more expensive than diamond (which may cost ~$50k per gram). $27M/gram, means that <1 gram could bankrupt a millionaire; and even 100 micrograms would, at ~$2700, be a financial burden for many if not most Americans; notwithstanding the huge hassle of handling and transporting 252Cf (due to the highly penetrating neutron radiation it produces), and the fact that one would want 252Cf only for very special purposes (basically, cases where an intense, compact source of free neutrons is desired).
