Can finite be also pronounced 'fih niht' rather than 'fai naite'? I have heard this several times mainly in the context of math discussion of finite fields etc. Any localized / british pronunciation differences? Thanks.

In Britain I've only heard it pronounced /ˈfaɪ.naɪt/, in contrast to "infinite", which is normally /ˈɪn.fɪn.ət/ but occasionally /ˈɪnˌfaɪ.naɪt/. If there is a different pronunciation for specialist mathematics uses I wouldn't know about them though. Thryduulf 13:53, 3 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
