Picture[edit]

On Commons, a user opines that the first picture is not a flan. (To me, however, it does look like a picture of a flan.) It could be swapped out for File:Flausona.jpg if that picture is better. - -sche (discuss) 02:22, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Rfv-sense "fan of Firefly". It's real, but IME not nearly as common as Browncoat, and I just don't see any cites. @Cloudcuckoolander, -sche, or anyone else who is good at finding things, can you work your magic? —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 06:16, 30 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Cited, I think, with help from Equinox. Five citations from four distinct newsgroups. In the process I discovered a restaurant called Cafe Firefly (apparently related to wildlife conservation rather than TV) which offers flan on its menu. Also, Flanvention looks citable from Usenet. - -sche (discuss) 07:16, 30 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks; looks good to me. Conclusion: I am doing something terribly wrong when I try to search on GGC. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 07:50, 30 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Google Groups doesn't work as well as it used to work. It appears that many posts aren't getting properly indexed. Searching all of Google Groups for a specific keyword will sometimes return very few to zero results even though are actually dozens of posts featuring said keyword out there. These posts can be found by individually searching a specific newsgroup, but that's obviously a more time-consuming process. I've been able to cite a number of fandom-related terms that appeared uncitable at first glace this way. Basically, if you're trying to cite a fandom-related term, try individually searching major fannish newsgroups (the newsgroups for Star Trek, Buffy the Vampire, Xena: Warrior Princess, and The X-Files seem to be/have been the most active).
If you're getting too many irrelevant results, try adding an additional keyword to your search. Like "firefly flan science fiction" or "firefly flan whedon" to pre-emptively weed out the surprising number of conversations involving insects and pastries. -Cloudcuckoolander (talk) 23:19, 30 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@-sche - "Flanvention" was the name of a Firefly/Serenity fan convention held in 2005. It was almost held again in 2006, but ended up being cancelled one day before it was scheduled. All Usenet citations for "Flanvention" are references to this specific convention, so it doesn't seem to be a generic noun meaning any Firely fan convention. -Cloudcuckoolander (talk) 00:09, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
