Etymology[edit]

I would presume that the "inter-" prefix is not the generally-used meaning of "among or between", but consider that this term appears to have begun on Usenet, so "Internet" is probably more relevant.

Actually, Maddy Page argued for the "among or between" meaning. One beef with the term was that it mixed Latin (inter-) with Greek (-nym). But the alternative word was "epenthetic", which, of course, means something different. My citation is the archive of alt.folklore.urban (and having been a part of the discussion). Revised etymology accordingly. (--Rick Denney)
