Rfv-sense for the racial sense. See Wiktionary:Tea room/2020/September#oil_and_water_don't_mix. - -sche (discuss) 19:47, 28 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

I think I could find some citations, like this one. What standard of evidence is required to call it a separate sense and not just an example of the broader sense? (Perhaps there's the fact that "oil" refers to the black and "water" to the white, and never vice versa.)

She say that when nigger people step out o' they place and start for rub shoulders with Bacra, trouble just 'round the corner. She say oil and water don't mix, and she going beat me if I keep company with you.

Re how to tell if it's a separate sense or just the broader sense: I'm not sure. (This is a widespread difficulty, Aingotno just pointed it out with regard to Wiktionary:Tea room/2020/October#problematic.) I was and am hoping other people might weigh in. I see your point that it's colour-coded. - -sche (discuss) 06:54, 14 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
