right vs. rightly[edit]

Just thinking: "right" means correct, and you can say "do I understand rightly?" but not "*I wasn't doing it rightly" (this would have to be adverbial "right", or e.g. "correctly", "properly"). I wonder why. Equinox 21:59, 25 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
