a section at the end of a fugue in which successive introductions of the theme follow at shorter intervals, increasing the sense of excitement.
• (also stretta) a passage, esp. at the end of an aria or movement, to be performed in quicker time.
Harvard Dictionary of Music (1969)
(1) In a fugue, the imitation of the subject in close succession, with the answer entering before the subject is completed; (2) In non-fugal compositions, a stretto (stretta) is a concluding section in faster tempo, as e.g., at the end of the last movement of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.
