Etymology[edit]

A portmanteau of the Japanese ‎(tamago, egg) and ウオッチ ‎(uocchi), the katakana form of the English word watch. Early on, in Japan, Tamagotchi was written in English as Tamagotch. When the Tamagotchi was introduced overseas, an "i" was added at the end or the name. Recently, Japan has followed this and replaced Tamagotch for Tamagotchi.
