Usage[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from the work Sylvæ: Or, The Second Part of Poetical Miscellanies (1st edition, 1685; 1973 reprint) which contains contributions from William Bowles, Charles Dryden, John Dryden, and John Stafford. It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work (contents) at Google Books (archived at the Internet Archive).

Parameters[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1= or |chapter=mandatory: the name of the chapter quoted from. If quoting from a chapter indicated in the second column of the following table, give this parameter the value indicated in the first column:
Sylvæ: Or, The Second Part of Poetical Miscellanies
Parameter value Result First page number
Preface Preface unnumbered page
Ariadna The Complaint of Ariadna. Out of Catullus. page 380
Nisus and Euryalus The Entire Episode of Nisus and Euryalus, Translated from the 5th and 9th Books of Virgils Æneids. page 1
Theocritus 10 The Reapers. The Tenth Idyllium of Theocritus. page 367
The preface is not paginated, but |1= or |page= can be used to specify the "page number" that Google Books has assigned to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. Thus, if the URL is https://books.google.com/books?id=OVI6AQAAMAAJ&pg=PP15, specify |page=15. This information must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work. For help with adding other works to the template, leave a message on the talk page or at "Wiktionary:Grease pit".
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory: the page or range of pages quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page numbers of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=110–111.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
