Usage

[edit]

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote Miss Guion’s[1][2] work The Three Germans. Mysteries Exemplified in the Life of Holstein of Lutztein. A German Romance. (1st edition, 1807, 3 volumes). The template can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at Google Books:

In the online version of volume I, pages 4972 are mistakenly instead of volume I of Corinna; or, Italy ({{RQ:Stael Lawler Corinna}}), a different and unrelated work. As no other online version is currently available, the text of The Three Germans from these pages is unavailable; hence, the template throws an error if these pages are specified.

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1= or |volume=mandatory: the volume number quoted from, in uppercase Roman numerals, from |volume=I to |volume=III.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the chapter quoted from, and to link to an online version of the work.
  • The chapter numbers start from I in each volume.
  • Chapters IV and V of volume II are misnumbered as VII and VIII. The template indicates the correct number for the latter in square brackets.
  • Chapters [IV] of volume II and XI of volume III are the only ones that are named. The template indicates the name instead of the number.
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, “some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell”) rather than an actual use of it (for example, “we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset”), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
