Documentation for Template:hu-noun. [edit]
This page contains usage information, categories, interwiki links and other content describing the template.

This template provides the inflection line of a Hungarian singular noun. It is placed immediately below the ===Noun=== header to show the inflection line, the singular and plural forms of a nominative noun.

Unnamed parameters[edit]

|1=
plural suffix, values can be:
k/ak/ok/ek/ök if the noun has a plural form
- (a hyphen) will display uncountable (or usually uncountable when followed by a plural form)
~ (a tilde) will display countable and uncountable, plural xx where xx is the full plural form
no parameters: will display the lemma itself

Named parameters[edit]

|pl=
provide the full plural form for nouns with non-standard plural
|1=, |alt=
provide the regular and alternative plural for nouns with two plural forms
|nopalindromecat=1
disable adding to Category:Hungarian palindromes, for terms like gazság that look like palindromes but aren't

Regular nouns[edit]

For regular nouns, this template takes one parameter. The template calls the PAGENAME for the singular form and uses this as the base for the plural form.

Examples:

In cases where there is a vowel shift in the suffix, the shifted suffix is simply used.

Examples:
  • For hal (fish) (adds -ak to form plural, even though -ok is expected):
    {{hu-noun|ak}}
  • For szög (nail) (adds -ek to form plural, even though -ök is expected):
    {{hu-noun|ek}}

Irregular nouns[edit]

For irregular nouns, where the stem drops a vowel to form the plural, the plural form must be given in full using the pl= option.

Examples:
  • For álom (dream) (stem shortens to álm- by dropping the final vowel):
    {{hu-noun|pl=álmok}}
  • For (horse) (the vowel shortens to lo and vak is added):
    {{hu-noun|pl=lovak}}

Nouns with two plural forms[edit]

Some nouns have two plurals: with and without stem change. In these cases the second plural is provided by |alt= and then the second plural (short for alternative). Such nouns are collected in Category:Hungarian nouns with multiple plural forms.

Example:
and for the other order of appearance:
{{hu-noun|pl=varjak|alt=varjúk}}

Nouns lacking a plural form[edit]

For nouns without plural forms, use |1=-.

Example:

Nouns not usually having a plural form[edit]

If a plural form is still supplied as a second parameter (either unnamed or named pl or plural or alt), then the description will be usually uncountable, plural followed by the plural form based on the second parameter.

Example:
  • For gallium (normally uncountable as ‘the metal gallium’; but occasionally also countable as ‘a piece of this metal’):
    {{hu-noun|-|ok}}

Nouns which are both countable and uncountable[edit]

Some nouns have no plural for one sense, but do have one for another sense. For these, use 1=~ and use the second parameter to give the plural ending, or the pl= parameter if it is irregular.

Example:
