This template generates a definition in entries for Portuguese noun forms.

This template should be added to the entry of any Portuguese noun form aside from the lemma form.

Before adding this template to an entry, it is important to know its lemma form: the canonical form of the Portuguese noun, used to represent all inflected forms. Many Portuguese nouns can be inflected to two genders (masculine and feminine) and two numbers (singular and plural). However, they don't always follow this rule: there are also many nouns that have only one gender, and some of these have only one number.

If a noun can be inflected to two genders and two numbers, the masculine singular is the lemma: e.g., amigo (male “friend”) is the lemma of amiga (female “friend”), amigos (male “friends”) and amigas (female “friends”). If a noun has only one gender, the singular form is the lemma: e.g., montanha (one “mountain”) is the lemma of montanhas (two or more “mountains”). If a noun has only one gender and one number, the only existing form is the lemma: e.g., copas (the card suit “hearts”); these nouns only can be used as plurals, and therefore are pluralia tantum. This template obviously should not be used for pluralia tantum.

Additionally, there are derived forms common to all non-pluralia tantum nouns that also should be defined using this template: augmentative and diminutive, that express larger or shorter size or intensity.

Unnamed parameters[edit]

The template uses up to 4 unnamed parameters to link to the lemma form of the noun and add the entry to the corresponding categories.

{{{1}}} (required): the lemma form of the noun.
{{{2}}} (required): the gender of the noun form.
  • If the noun can be inflected to two genders, should be m (masculine) or f (feminine).
  • If the noun has only one gender, should be onlym (only masculine) or onlyf (only feminine).
{{{3}}} (required): the number of the noun form.
  • sg (singular) or pl (plural).
{{{4}}} (required if applicable): the degree of the noun form.
  • aug (augmentative) or dim (diminutive).
  • If a degree is not required, should be blank or omitted.

Named parameters[edit]

The template uses up to 2 named parameters for additional options.

{{{nocap}}} (optional): should normally be blank or omitted; otherwise, the first letter of the template’s result text is not capitalized.
{{{nodot}}} (optional): should normally be blank or omitted; otherwise, no period is included at the end of the template’s result text.

If one or all of the required parameters are missing, the template generates a simple definition and adds the entry to Category:Requests for cleanup (Portuguese noun form).
