I'm going to take the unusual step of declaring my real name: Edward Aveyard. I do this because I am the representative on the committee of the Atlas Linguarum Europae for England and Wales, and I see the potential of Wiktionary to relate this underappreciated survey to the current day.
I am both the Honorary Librarian and Honorary Treasurer of the Yorkshire Dialect Society. In this role, I have become well-acquainted with John Widdowson (the previous Honorary Librarian). As he could not find anyone else to trust with the ALE fieldwork from England and Wales, he donated it to me. I also own various other books on languages, particularly on English dialects. I do not speak Welsh, but I plan to learn some of it and I want to connect with Welsh-speakers here so that we can make the most of the ALE fieldwork in Wales.
I am the "archivist" for this collection: https://archive.org/details/dialects-english-scots
I've also made a few videos on the ALE files on YouTube, although I realised quickly that I needed to work on my pronunciation for other dialects. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AI2ZIb5pFZw&list=PLqj_FG3u6R-PaHbe17wrbjLvfoW1RkTqh
For those interested in the Survey of English Dialects, the closest site to where I grew up is Y26 Thornhill, although I was only born in 1985 and some features of the dialect had died out by then.
I wrote this on 15th August 2025 at about 10pm in British time. I have only been an occasional contributor to Wiktionary hitherto, but I plan to get more involved henceforth. Epa101 (talk) 21:17, 15 August 2025 (UTC)
