Etymology

Coined by Peter Needham in Harrius Potter et Philosophi Lapis (2003), his translation of J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (1997). Based on Hogwarts (hog + wart).

Pronunciation

Proper adjective

1. Hogwarts, the fictional school of magic in the Harry Potter series.

Usage notes

• Hogvartensis acts as an adjective, much in the way Hogwarts can in English. Just as English can have "Hogwarts school" and "the Hogwarts song," so Latin has "schola Hogvartensis" and "carmen Hogvartense."
