S'mae!

[edit]

Hello! I'm a budding TEFL teacher from the UK, studying the subject in university. I contribute to the English Wiktionary in my spare time when I notice something is missing. With respect to teaching, I focus on refugees and Chinese students.

Helo! Rwy'n fyfyriwr ysgol arferol o'r DU, yn astudio dulliau TEFL yn y brifysgol. Dwi'n helpu gyda Wiciadur Saesneg pan mae gen i amser rhydd ac yn methu ffeindio gair. O ran athrawon, rhoddaf sylw i fyfyrwyr o Tsieina, a rhoddaf sylw hefyd i ymagwedd athrawon at ffoaduriaid.

Languages I am interested in

[edit]
  • English - Anything from contemporary usage to archaic Middle or Old English. I can understand Old Saxon Futhorc (ᚩᛚᛞ ᛋᚪᛉᚩᚾ ᚠᚢᚦᚩᚱᚳ) and Deseret script (𐐔𐐯𐑅𐐨𐑉𐐯𐐻).
  • Mandarin Chinese - I speak Mandarin at a roughly HSK5 level, can hold a decent conversation. I'm interested in Classical Chinese works and contemporary music. I picked it up for my boyfriend and potential future economic opportunities. If you care, I can read Zhuyin (ㄓㄨˋ ㄧㄣ) too.
  • Welsh - My mother tongue, but I am decidedly out of practice, living in England for so long. I find talking to cymry up north decidedly harder than usual...
  • Yiddish - The language of my mother's ancestors. We unfortunately lost the language over time, so I'm doing my diligence. I'm chiefly interested in Loshn-koydesh.

Yiddish contributions

[edit]

I have studied Yiddish on an academic level as part of some linguistics courses at my university. The language of my mother's ancestors, I consider it important to understand its history and importance.

Khurbn Yiddish Project

[edit]

Khurbn Yiddish (חורבן ייִדיש) is the sociolect used by Jews who inhabited the death camps used during the Holocaust perpetrated by Nazi Germany. It was a subject of morbid intrigue for Yiddish scholars after the second World War, as many Jews who survived did not speak the same Yiddish as what was spoken outside. Individuals such as Blumenthal began producing dictionaries compiling these "Khurbnisms", of which have only recently begun to be documented in English-medium academia. Many of these words are haunting and utterly disgusting, but seeing a Yiddish narrative of the Holocaust, given the bulk of those who perished were Yiddish speakers, to me, is important, and I am glad Wiktionary has given them a space.

Loshn-koydesh Project

[edit]

Loshn-koydesh (לשון־קודש) is the use of Hebrew or Aramaic words in Yiddish, wherein their orthography deliberately matches that of their original language. Giving Yiddish its own answer for, say, Kanji or Hanja, I've taken a fascination with this aspect of the Yiddish language. I began contributing to Wiktionary using a book by Steven A. Jacobson that aimed to compile the Hebraic words used in Yiddish. The original aim was to produce an AnkiDroid deck of useful terms, but it turned into a 3-month long project to add numerous Yiddish definitions of Hebrew words to Wiktionary, including new pages.

As of December 2024, I see this aspect of my Wiktionary contributions "done", as I'm finished rooting through the book. Definitely lots more to see, though.
