I'm Mark A. Mandel. Professionally, I'm a linguist -- a language scientist -- retired in 2013 from the Linguistic Data Consortium of the University of Pennsylvania. There I worked on Thai, Tagalog, Pashto, Tigrinya, Moroccan Berber, and Yoruba, and also on Bengali, Tamil, and Urdu. I wrote my dissertation on American Sign Language, and I've studied lots more languages to a greater or lesser degree. I frequent the LINGUIST List as well as the mailing lists of the American Dialect Society and the American Name Society.
Recreationally, I occasionally hang around on the Lois Bujold and Dragaera mailing lists (the latter for Steven Brust fans), among other places. I'm also an active filker. (adapted from my Wikipedia talk page)
