sort key etc

The hidx= parameter provides the sort key for whichever category the template adds the entry to. (Without displaying hiragana that isn't used. Also: words don't go in Category:Japanese language itself. Robert Ullmann 13:01, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your advice, but that's not what I read in the documentation for Template:ja-noun. Quoting from the page:

hidx= hiragana index, only if the hiragana for the entry begins with a 濁音 ("two-dot kana") or with a 半濁音 ("one-circle-kana"), use the optional hidx parameter to index it under the corresponding 清音 ("simple kana"), if two-dot, follow the word with one apostrophe ', if circle, with two to maintain the sort order.

In addition, my removal of the hidx parameter was done after looking at Category:Japanese_katakana. From what I see, listing katakana words under katakana sortkeys seemed to be the practice here, and was trying to "correct" those words who were listed with hiragana sortkeys. I must be slightly confused here. What is the correct way? Looking forward to your kind guidance, Asahiko 03:46, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

The template should have the hidx= parameter for (e.g.) Category:Japanese nouns; if it isn't doing the katakana cat correctly, that needs to be fixed in the template itself, not by trying to fix entries. Hmmm: WT:AJ says all categories except kanji and rōmaji are sorted by hiragana; that should be corrected to include the katakana category. But the template is already correct: it does not add the hidx sortkey to the Japanese katakana category. Robert Ullmann 06:35, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks Robert, I think I'm getting it. The katakana cat was done incorrectly in hiragana because of DEFAULTSORT.[1] I was trying to eliminate the hiragana sorting from the Category:Japanese katakana, and I have mistakenly thought that that's because of hidx. Moreover, the portion from the Template:ja-noun documentation I've quoted above only mentions hiragana so it sounded (to me) as if hidx shouldn't be placed on katakana words. I believe I'm too a newbie to meddle with documentations, so I'd appreciate it if you could alter its wordings in your spare time to avoid further misreadings like mine. Importation of a French/Japanese dictionary on Wiktionary

Hello !

We are transferring the content of dico.fj.free.fr, a French/Japanese dictionary based on EDict. We are about to import 17 000 articles :) These are what we are working on :

• We have to improve the Japanese conjugation templates.
• We also are completing this pronunciation table.
• And of course, we are working on conversion rules for the importation :)

We have already :

• a function that generates romaji from kana
• a function that generates IPA pronunciation from kana

All contributors are welcome !
