SRN IPA

[edit]

Hello there, regret to report that the srn-IPA template still (or again?) puts the stress wrong when consonant-consonant occurs, e.g. /maˈɾkusa/ in stead of /maɾ'kusa/.

For realistic pronunciations of phrases etc., is there any way to let me include French-style liaisons "‿" ? Compare obia a no fu yu, no spiti na ini.

Pinging @AmazingJus as I got the impression he was working on the template too (I might be mistaken). Best wishes. Appolodorus1 (talk) 10:36, 23 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Appolodorus1, yes I did some work on that module, but it was mostly cosmetic cleaning up. The stress part I mostly left alone. That being said, I see that markusa has been addressed — at the moment, you have to manually input _ before the stressed syllable. However, it wouldn't hurt to improve the stress positioning only before a single consonant and certain clusters — oi yeah nah mate amazingJUSSO ... [ɡəˈdæɪ̯]! 12:28, 23 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
And regarding the liaison, we can use the hyphen or the liaison symbol ‿ itself — oi yeah nah mate amazingJUSSO ... [ɡəˈdæɪ̯]! 12:29, 23 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
@AmazingJus, Appolodorus1: I've just gone and removed the automatic stressing. Someone can readd it, if they like, but I don't want to deal with it. Stress can still be manually specified with _.
As for liaison, you can just add it with in param 1. If that's too inconvenient, I can make - or something convert to it.
Aside, at obia a no fu yu, no spiti na ini, for the second pronunciation, do I need to add a way to suppress phonemic pronunciations for cases like that? It doesn't seem like that should be in //.

@Saph I see, thanks for letting me know. I might update the module with that stress later on. — oi yeah nah mate amazingJUSSO ... [ɡəˈdæɪ̯]! 11:01, 26 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

you didn't notice he created it under Proto West Germanic but gives a purported East Germanic name? And all his descendants are derived terms with a weak-declension suffix to indicate proper names. if they are even attested. Griffon77 (talk) 06:02, 13 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

What? I'm not knowledgeable on Germanic, I was doing a cleanup task. If you think the entry is wrong, then fix it. Saph (talk) 06:33, 13 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

changing the default text for levels 1/2/3 of spoken languages

[edit]

Currently, it reads This user is able to contribute with an intermediate level of Turkish or whatever. This sounds not quite grammatical to me; what do you think of changing it to be e.g. This user speaks Turkish at an intermediate level? This mirrors how the corresponding text works for sign languages, as well as the corresponding category text (These users speak Turkish at an intermediate level etc.). That sounds good to me. I've changed it in Module:Babel/data. My knowledge of the category tree is a bit rusty — can you point me to where the messages for the categories are? Saph (talk) 20:18, 10 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
It's in Module:category tree/wiktionary users around line 138 and following. It uses the same text for spoken and sign languages except that the verb changes: speak for spoken languages, communicate in for sign languages. Benwing2 (talk) 21:22, 10 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
