Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy documenting how Wiktionary pages should be formatted. All entries should conform to this standard. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing page for a similar word, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Our Criteria for inclusion (CFI) define exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary, though it may be a bit technical and longwinded. The most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • The FAQ aims to answer most of your remaining questions, and there are several help pages that you can browse for more information.
  • A glossary of our technical jargon, and some hints for dealing with the more common communication issues.
  • If you have anything to ask about or suggest, we have several discussion rooms. Feel free to ask any other editors in person if you have any problems or question, by posting a message on their talk page.

You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage. This shows which languages you know, so other editors know which languages you'll be working on, and what they can ask you for help with.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! If you have any questions, bring them to the Wiktionary:Information desk, or ask me on my talk page. If you do so, please sign your posts with four tildes: ~~~~ which automatically produces your username and the current date and time.

Again, welcome! Ultimateria 02:14, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi. This is not an "alternative form", but a synonym. Equinox 20:09, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

street money[edit]

Please look at how I changed the formatting of the citation, so you can get it right in future. In particular, don't put the quoted text in italics: that's for made-up usage examples, not real citations. Thanks. Equinox 17:32, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for your recent Wikisaurus contributions, e.g. the expansion of Wikisaurus:musician‎.

One note on excessive specificity, IMHO anyway: I don't think we need WS:dictionary and WS:thesaurus given we already have WS:reference work and Wikisaurus:literature. Instead of creating WS:dictionary, I would find it preferable to have WS:reference work expanded. --Dan Polansky (talk) 09:00, 12 July 2015 (UTC)

I'm pretty agnostic on Wikisaurus:thesaurus, I think it's useful but I wouldn't be upset if it were deleted. Wikisaurus:dictionary is pretty interesting I think, and has some synonyms I think a lot of people aren't aware of, so I'd rather keep that one. WurdSnatcher (talk) 13:43, 12 July 2015 (UTC)
Ok. I think the synonyms of Wikisaurus:dictionary can be covered by WS:reference work, which already has multiple of them. Nonetheless, I redirected WS:thesaurus to WS:reference work, and I'll leave WS:dictionary be for the time being. --Dan Polansky (talk) 13:49, 12 July 2015 (UTC)

Thai stick[edit]

Would you be able to create Thai stick in the mainspace? I see you have added this to Wikisaurus. --Dan Polansky (talk) 09:02, 23 August 2015 (UTC)

I copied from OED. What is wrong with "Negro slave"? --Vahag (talk) 08:39, 9 September 2015 (UTC)

Compound words[edit]

When adding etymologies, could you use the appropriate templates? This helps keep things organised and properly categorized. For compound words, please use {{compound}}, like I did at townmate. Thank you! —CodeCat 14:08, 22 September 2015 (UTC)

If you don’t mind me asking, are you African? --Romanophile (contributions) 04:36, 9 October 2015 (UTC)

schwag, shwag[edit]

Hi. This is presumably only used for the slang "style" sense, and not e.g. for stolen money, so please add appropriate glosses. Equinox 18:10, 10 October 2015 (UTC)

Can you please add some cites?[edit]

Hi there, and thank you for your help!

Can you please add some citations, for your new entry, at pile on ?

Thank you,

-- Cirt (talk) 16:44, 13 October 2015 (UTC)

Stuff like argue into[edit]

Hi! I think maybe you're not totally sure about how prepositions work. Can I ask that you discuss with the community before adding further entries like this? One rule of thumb is: can you move the "preposition" after the noun phrase (pick up the pen, pick the pen up); that's a good sign of a fixed phrase. But if it's something like "leave pens throughout the country", then "leave throughout" probably shouldn't have an entry. Equinox 03:21, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

Let the reader work out the meanings from the individual words, and improve those words if needed. If we wanted to cater for readers who literally can't put two words together, we'd end up with black car, red house and so on. Renard Migrant (talk) 18:18, 28 November 2015 (UTC)

Where did you find this term? I can't find it anywhere in either English or Chinese. ---> Tooironic (talk) 12:07, 21 January 2016 (UTC)
