Etymology 1[edit]

Originally an initialism of Valtionrautatiet (literally State Railways), the name of the state-owned company that maintained the Finnish railway network. It was later merged into the newly created VR Group, restructuring the existing company into a private one by 1995 (which however remains government-owned).
