Etymology

Internationalism, based on the international name stem Vatikan-, ultimately from Latin Vātī̆cānus (“Vatican Hill”), with the Norwegian neuter definite singular ending -et (“definite singular ending”), literally “the Vatican”. The Latin name is of unknown further origin; the connection with vāticinārī (“to prophesy”) is folk-etymological.

Vatikanet may refer to the sovereign state, the papal territory and building complex, or metonymically to the papal government.
Vatikanstaten (“Vatican City”) is the unambiguous name of the sovereign territorial state. Den hellige stol (“the Holy See”) denotes the papal governing and diplomatic entity and is formally distinct from Vatikanstaten.
