Introduction[edit]

Entry format[edit]

You are advised to read Wiktionary:Entry layout explained first. It sets forth the general formatting rules for entries.

Orthography[edit]

Modern Armenian has two orthographies, traditional Armenian orthography (TAO) and reformed Armenian orthography (RAO). The traditional orthography is used in Western Armenian texts and in Eastern Armenian texts published before the reform in 1922–1924, as well as in Eastern Armenian currently written by the community in Iran. The reformed orthography is used in Eastern Armenian written in the Republic of Armenia and ex-USSR communities, as well as in Western Armenian texts adapted for Eastern Armenian readers.

Moreover, the reformed orthography used during 1922–1940 for Eastern Armenian was different from the orthography used later.

Thus, five spellings of Armenian terms are possible: Eastern Armenian in TAO, Eastern Armenian in RAO of 1922–1940, Eastern Armenian in modern RAO, Western Armenian in TAO, Western Armenian in modern RAO. All five variants should be included in Wiktionary, as long as each spelling passes WT:CFI.

To avoid duplication Eastern Armenian in modern RAO should be the main entry. The others should be mentioned in the ===Alternative forms=== header of the main entry, qualified with the templates {{hy-TAO}} and {{hy-RAO}}, and should be defined as alternative forms using the templates {{hy-traditional}} and {{hy-reformed}}. See երջանկություն (erǰankutʿyun), երջանկութիւն (erǰankutʿiwn) and յերջանկություն (yerǰankutʿyun) for an example.

In translations of English terms only modern reformed orthography should be used for consistency, both for Eastern and Western Armenian.

եւ (ew) vs և (ew)[edit]

եւ (ew) and և (ew) are merely typographical variants of each other. Both are correct. To be consistent Wiktionary had to choose one of the variants and it chose եւ (ew). Spellings with և (ew) should be hard-redirected to the spellings with եւ (ew).

Punctuation[edit]

Use the correct Unicode characters for Armenian punctuation, namely:  ՙ    ՚   ՛   ՜   ՝   ՞   ՟     ։   ֊
