Derived from Middle Persian *Yōnān, from Old Persian 𐎹𐎢𐎴 (y-u-n /⁠Yaunaʰ⁠/, Ionia), from Ancient Greek Ἰωνία (Iōnía, Ionia), derived from Ἴων (Íōn, Ion, the name of the mythological ancestor of the Ionian people), of uncertain further origin.
