[edit]A vernacular form of the Latin saint's name Geōrgius and of its Old Swedish / Middle Low Saxon equivalents (Old Swedish Jürgen, Middle Low German Jurgen), ultimately from Ancient Greek Γεώργῐος (Geṓrgĭos). Attested as Yrjä (and the variant Yrjänä) already in medieval records.[1] Cognate to English George.

[edit]Since 2002, the Institute for the Languages of Finland has recommended the use of unadapted regal names for new heads of state. Thus, Charles III of England is Charles but Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden is Kaarle Kustaa.
