- (Zeeland) First attested as Het Zijpe around 1750. Derived from the hydronym Zijpe, which in turn derives from Middle Dutch sijpen (“drip, trickle”).
- (former municipality) Named after a former closure gap called the Zijpe (first attested as zype in 1285), the name of which derives from Middle Dutch sijpen (“drip, trickle”).
