Zweiflügler
Appearance
German
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Zwei (“two”) + Flügel (“wing”) + -er (“-er”). Calque of translingual Diptera.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]Zweiflügler m (strong, genitive Zweiflüglers, plural Zweiflügler)
Usage notes
[edit]- The term Zweiflügler is not synonymous to "fly" as it is in English. Instead, in German, the dipterans are conceptualized as containing both the Fliegen (“flies”) and the Mücken (“nematocerans; mosquitos, gnats, midges, etc.”) as two distinct categories.
