Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as suindrecht in 1280-1287. Likely a compound of Old Dutch swin (gully, creek) and dreht (ferry, watercourse) (see -drecht). The first element was gradually reinterpreted to zwijn (boar). Compare Barendrecht and Ossendrecht.
