Inherited from Medieval Tashelhit اَكُّ (aggu, smoke), from Proto-Berber *a-ʔβu (smoke)[1].

Cognate with Awjila avú (smoke), Ghadames oβu (smoke), Kabyle abbu (smoke), Tuareg ăho (smoke), Tetserret awwu (smoke), and Zenaga oʔbih (smoke).
