From Old Portuguese aljoufar, from Arabic جَوْهَر ‎(jawhar, jewel, pearl), from Persian گوهر ‎(gouhar, jewel, pearl), from Middle Persian gwhl ‎(gōhr, substance, essence; jewel), from Old Persian *gauθra, *gavaθra, from Proto-Indo-European. Cognate with Galician alxofre and Spanish aljófar.
