Etymology[edit]

Starostin suggests Proto-Inuit *atqa-nǝʁ, from Proto-Eskimo *atʁa-. Fortescue suggests, via aqqaneq (eleven, numeral base), from aqqarpoq (descends) itself derived from Proto-Eskimo *at(ə)- (down), i.e. "that which is provided when one has descended" (when one reaches the toe having reached ten using the fingers).
