From the riduction of Latin auricula, from auris (“ear”) +‎ -cula (diminutive suffix). Cognate with Italian orecchia, Neapolitan aurecchia, Emilian uraccia, Catalan orella, Portuguese ourelha, Occitan aurelha and Spanish oreja.
