From Javanese ꦧꦤ꧀ꦢꦼꦭ꧀, ꦧꦤ꧀ꦝꦼꦭ꧀ (bandel, bandhel, “obstinate, stubborn; undisciplined, disobedient; brave”), probably from Old Javanese waṅhĕl (“braced up, obstinate”), waṅal.
