Etymology

Of uncertain origin. Either borrowed from Slovak batoh, or internally derived as a nominalization of the present participle form of a lost verb stem related to bugyolál (to wrap), bugyor (bindle) and bonyolít (to entangle). First attested in 1792.[1][2]

  1. bundle (package of things wrapped in a piece of fabric tied at the corners for carrying)
  2. (cooking) parcel (a small amount of food that has been wrapped up in pastry brought together at the corners)

  3. (figurative) baggage, burden, weight (a cause of worry; that which is grievous, wearisome, or oppressive)
