[edit]First attested in 1497. The short nasal vowel in the 3rd sg. blê "to buy" and the long nasal in the 1st-3rd sg. blẽ "id." point to a Common Albanian *blên, inherited from Proto-Albanian *blêna/i-, from Pre-Proto-Albanian *blena/e-, from either Proto-Indo-European *h₃bʰloi̯éi̯e/o- (“to buy”) or Proto-Indo-European *bʰl̥nh₂énti (“to buy”).[1] A reasonable formal and semantic match is found in Ancient Greek ὄφελος (óphelos, “advantage, help”).
