From Vulgar Latin *blastēmāre, present active infinitive of *blastēmō, from Ecclesiastical Latin, Late Latin blasphēmō, from Ancient Greek βλασφημέω (blasphēméō). Compare Aromanian blastim, blãstimari, Italian bestemmiare, Friulian blestemâ, Spanish lastimar.
