Asturian

The carbayón de Valentín, in Xera, Tinéu. One of the oldest oak trees in Asturias, known since the Middle Ages.

Etymology

uncertain origin. Possibly from a local Latin *carbālius via Paleo-Hispanic. Cognate to Portuguese carvalho, Galician carballo, and Spanish carvallo. By surface analysis, carba +‎ -ayu (which is parallel with how carballo was formed in Galician).
