Etymology
[edit]uncertain origin. Possibly from a local Latin *carbālius via Paleo-Hispanic. Cognate to Portuguese carvalho, Galician carballo, and Spanish carvallo. By surface analysis, carba + -ayu (which is parallel with how carballo was formed in Galician).
