Etymology[edit]

From Old Portuguese castanno (brown), probably from Latin castaneus (pertaining to chestnuts). Doublet of castâneo.

Cognate with Galician castaño, Mirandese castanho, Asturian castañu, Spanish castaño and Catalan castany.
