Etymology

    Inherited from Late Latin caballus (horse), from Latin caballus (pack horse), from Gaulish *kaballos, from Proto-Celtic *kaballos, perhaps ultimately an Asiatic borrowing or Wanderwort, (compare, i.e., Ancient Greek καβάλλης (kabállēs, nag)). Cognate with Galician cabalo, Portuguese cavalo, Catalan cavall, Asturian caballu, Spanish caballo, French cheval, Italian cavallo, Romanian cal, Corsican cavallu ~ cavaddu, Sardinian cabaddu.
