From late Proto-Germanic *kirikǭ (whence also Old Dutch and Old Saxon kirika, Old English ċiriċe), from Byzantine Greek κυριακόν δόμα ‎(kuriakón dóma, Lord's house), from Ancient Greek κύριος ‎(kúrios, lord).
