Etymology[edit]

From Old Galician and Old Portuguese companna, from Vulgar Latin *compania, from Latin compāniō (whence also French compagnon, Italian compagnone), from cum + pānis, a calque of Gothic. Doublet of compañía. Compare Portuguese companha and Spanish compaña.
