Etymology

From Old Galician and Old Galician-Portuguese cravo (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Latin clāvus (nail) (maybe a semi-learned word, since it experienced an irregular phonetic evolution; compare also Spanish clavo), itself from Proto-Italic *klāwos, from Proto-Indo-European *kleh₂u-. Cognate with Portuguese cravo and Spanish clavo.
