crespine ‎(plural crespines)

  1. A headdress worn by both men* andwomen, usually made of wire or knitted mesh worn on either side of the head, used to contain the long hair.

[ NOTE* - use by men is clearly shown in the Great Tournament Roll of Westminster (dated 1511 and in the care of the Library of the College of Arms), in which many of the Royal Household senior male servants are depicted wearing crespines of gilt mesh/netting.]
