Etymology[edit]

Coined by Russian writer Grigorij Aleksinskij as a translation of Russian пораженец (poraženec), also coined by him as a derivation of поражение (poraženije, defeat). Surface analysis: défaite (defeat) +‎ -iste (-ist).
