Coined by Russian writer Grigorij Aleksinskij as a translation of Russian пораженец ‎(poraženec), also coined by him as a derivation of поражение ‎(poraženije, defeat). Surface analysis: défaite ‎(defeat) +‎ -iste ‎(-ist).
