Luxembourgish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Old High German *diuf, northern variant of tiuf, from Proto-Germanic *deupaz, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰéwbus. The expected masculine form is *déifen, but the fricative was voiced, possibly by analogy with Déif ‎(thief) and/or the rhyming adjective léif ‎(dear).
