Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Oghuz [Term?] (ayla) metathesis from Proto-Turkic *anlayu. Compare Old Turkic 𐰣𐰞𐰖𐰆 (anlayu), from 𐰣 (an-, she, he, it, that) + 𐰞𐰖𐰆 (-layu) (similative suffix). Compare Turkmen ol (she, he, it, that), from a merger of earlier an. Compare beýle (like this), şeýle (like that).

Cognate with Azerbaijani elə, Turkish öyle, etc.
