Borrowed from French ésotérique, from Ancient Greek ἐσωτερικός (esōterikós, belonging to an inner circle), from ἐσωτέρω (esōtérō, further inside), comparative of ἔσω (ésō, within), from ἐς (es), εἰς (eis, into).
