- (transitive, intransitive) to cause/suffer an explosion; to (make) burst
- (transitive, intransitive, figuratively) to manifest (itself) suddenly and noisily
- (intransitive) to lose temper suddenly and violently
- (intransitive) to increase rapidly
Usage notes
[edit]Historically some authors have considered this verb defective and proscribed its use in certain present-tense conjugations. Nevertheless, modern dictionaries recognize these conjugations, noting their variation between Brazilian and European Portuguese.[1]
