Etymology[edit]
Unknown. Possibly from the diminutive of a now-lost word in early Romanian, perhaps *fau > făuș (with the suffix -uș), later with the suffix -el. The root may derive from Latin fava (“bean”) (through a masculine or neuter form *fabus; cf. fabulus); compare also Aromanian fauã (“bean”). The analogy or comparison would be that of a small egg from a young hen to a bean[1]
